Saint John Summer 09

Why am I posting summer pictures even though it is just winter/spring… reason being, I can’t wait for summer to come. Enough of the cold winds and chilling winter… though I have to admit, the last few years, Winter was more extreme. I cannot wait for the grass to grow and flowers to bloom. Need a bit more Sun… and less clouds… hahaha.

Loyalist House Saint John

The Loyalist were people loyal to the British Crown especially during the American Revolution. A lot of loyalist migrated North to Canada. Here they established new communities. During our visit to Saint John, we went to the Loyalist House to look at the lifestyles of people from that era and the elegance of high society at that time.

LoyalistEntrance

The picture above shows the entrance to the loyalist house. The New Brunswick flag on the left and the Canadian flag on the right.

LoyalistStairs

Here we see the staircase in the house. You will notice their is a set of doors just below it. It is for the servants to be able to move around the house easily and unnoticed.

LoyalistLivingRoom

The elegantly designed living room for the loyalist. You will notice a lot of portraits hanging on the walls… not in this pictures though. Portraits at that time are the equivalent to what we have today called photos.

LoyalistDesk

Here our lovely guide shows us the hat… one of the ingredients to process the hat was mercury. Do you know where the term mad-hatter comes from? Hatters usually will suffer from mercury poisoning resulting in “certain” behaviors. More info here.

LoyalistPiano

Here we have two portraits of the people during that time. And also here we have the piano… it still works today even though it is quite old. It was so heavy that it took a lot of people to move it and you can see the bent on the ground caused by the weight.

LoyalistManuscript

A musical manuscript from that time.

LoyalistLantern

Our guide told us that this is actually a torch. You put a candle inside the case and the wind will never be able to blow out the light. Amazing design.

LoyalistItems

Some articles from that time.

LoyalistBottle

Here we have one of the earlier design for pop bottles. It is actually sealed with a glass marble. The pressure from the gas will seal the bottle. It is a very rare collection because it was really popular for children at that time to break those bottles to retrieve the marble.

LoyalistAlcohol

Liquor anyone?

LoyalistChinas

Some china or Chinese porcelain from that era.

LoyalistSpinningWheels

The spinning wheel. You just step on the pedal and it spins.

LoyalistBed

Our guide told us a very interesting fact here. She mentioned that the bed is actually held by roped across the frame and the material of the bed was made from hay. This is where the term “Sleep tight, don’t let the bed bugs bite” come from. Cause you will need to tighten the bed and there are bugs in the beds…

LoyalistCrib

A crib for the babies.

LoyalistWashroom1

This looks like a cabinet… but guess what it really is?

LoyalistWashroom2

Bingo! It is a personal toilet bowl. Only for the high society at that time.

LoyalistWashroom3

Another personal bowl for that time. Certainly blends well with the room.

LoyalistHouse

Another view of the loyalist house.

Thank you Adeline and Miles for bringing us here and thank you to our lovely guide for the interesting tour.
