*camera dilemma*

3 comments

Since my birthday was near, bi had decided to get me a new camera – with a feature that suits me. So, we eventually went to Black’s in Regent Mall on that very fateful day to just go get the Sony-W150. Bi saw it a few days ago. Well, anyways, thanks to the Canadian purchasing policy (I’m still very new to it), whereby customers are allowed to return within 14 days after purchase cIF they are not satisfied with it. For those who are interested in getting a new camera, this is a very good opportunity to try out and to make a good choice at the end of the day. I think I have abused the policy a wee lil’ bit, but assurances from the sales assistance somehow cured me from my thoughts. :p

What I like about the Sony-W150?

:: It has the super steady shot feature in it.

:: You could change the camera’s lenses into 3 different modes that suits you; normal, wide or tele. Well, of course you can’t ask for a super sharp photo from the tele, but frankly, it’s good enought for a compact digital camera.

:: I love the solid feel of it!

:: The crimson red colour! Personally I like it though, in comparison to the Canon PowerShot SD780. Hehehe…

What I don’t like about the Sony-W150?

:: 1 big problem. I wanna take macro shots of flowers. Sony-W150 couldn’t perform much better than my Sony-W55 even though it has of course better resolution than the latter one. Sony-W150′s f-stop is at 3.5 while the Sony-W55 is at a 2.8.

So… we had another trip to the Black’s and browsing the available digital cameras they have in their store… (and yes, we pretty much took a whole loads at their precious time). Initially I had been eyeing on the Sony T-series. Sony T-77. It could give me the feature I wanted – super close-up of things that I wanted to take. The downside of it after doing a mini research on it was that the picture quality wasn’t as good as it was expected. So bye-bye Sony T77. We ended up getting the Canon Powershot SD1200. And they have a cute green colour! :)

What I like about the Canon Powershot SD1200?

:: It’s cute!

:: Avril Lavigne’s the spokesperson for it.

:: It comes with the Black’s lens-brush pen that costs around 8 dollars for one.

What I don’t like about the Canon Powershot SD 1200?

:: It has the same f-stop as Sony-W150.

:: It feels like a camera-toy. It doesn’t have the solid feel to it.

:: Besides the vibrant cute green colour it has, I’d rather stick to my Sony-W55. :(

Since both the cameras does not really fit the features I wanted, so they’re back to their rightful shelf at Black’s. I’m a greedy person. Initially I had wanted to keep both of it all thanks to the different features Sony-W150 has and the cute green vibrant colour Canon Powershot SD1200 has. At this point, I was in a dilemma.  Bi  was busy researching online for the compact cameras that has the features he wanted me to have. Panasonic Lumix, Pentax, Nikon, … all those names came cropping up one by one. By then, I had given up hopes for getting a new camera that could let me take pictures literally.

It was that day when we had to go to Black’s – again, to return both the cameras we had bought earlier before the 14-days return policy are up. I was so heartbroken, in a way. Anyways, before we left the store, bi just couldn’t resist to get another camera to try out (and we were telling one another that this is the last camera that we’re gonna get. Crappy or not, we’re not going to return anymore. It’s just way too much!). I don’t like Nikon. I don’t like the Panasonic. They’re pretty much just like the rest of the cameras, just that they’re on the higher-end of it. Saw the Canon G10, tried it, luv it. But kept telling myself that that’s another high-end camera that’s pricey for a person like me. So, I don’t care and I don’t want to bother. Off we go to have some chicken wings (yes, minus the cameras).

Aah… it was then when the decision was made. Bi just could not get his mind off the Canon G10. Eventually after dinner, we went back in to Black’s bold-faced and just got the it. It was already closing time for the store. . and I told myself that I’m doomed. I knew that I could not go back to the other cameras if I had the chance to use this G10 baby. How could I? It happens to all of us! How could you downgrade yourself when you have tried the upgraded version when you can have it? I know it sounds a bit cocky, but hey, I’d be a hypocrite if I say that I could and won’t be the least affected by it.

What I like about the Canon G10?

:: It’s solid.

:: It can let me take macro shots to as close as 1cm afar.

:: I get to choose the focus point whilst most and other cameras aren’t able to provide such feature! (Ooh, I love me G10!)

What I don’t like about the Canon G10?

:: It’s a little bulky.

:: It’s only in black and ugly cos it’s in a classic style.

**I know I’m fussy. But that’s what I am. I wanna have the best for me cos I am a consumer with rights.  Thank goodness for the 14-day return policy they have here. :) And now I am a happy owner of Canon G10!**

Was just browsing through BBC NEWS, saw an interesting breakthrough in technology, a holographic disc developed by General Electric which could store 500GB of data in contrast with the dual layer Blu Ray disc with a capacity of 50GB… it’s ten fold increase in the same size. To read more about the development click here. This amount of data storage in such a versatile and portable media means good news in terms of backing up or just plain storing stuff. It would be a dream come true for a typical computer geek… hahaha…

From wikipedia:

The Holographic Versatile Disc (HVD) is an optical disc technology that, in the future, may hold up to 3.9 terabytes (TB) of information, although the current maximum is 500GB. It employs a technique known as collinear holography, whereby two lasers, one red and one green, are collimated in a single beam. The green laser reads data encoded as laser interference fringes from a holographic layer near the top of the disc while the red laser is used as the reference beam and to read servo information from a regular CD-style aluminum layer near the bottom. Servo information is used to monitor the position of the read head over the disc, similar to the head, track, and sector information on a conventional hard disk drive. On a CD or DVD this servo information is interspersed amongst the data.

I came across an article earlier on today regarding Yasmin Ahmad’s latest TV commercial that touches on the theme funeral. Her TV commercial entitled Funeral itself was a wonderful piece, that’s what I think personally. Filmed at another perspective on the way we would look at death of a beloved, I think she did an amazing job in expressing the depth of a person knowing another being by being frank about the imperfections that person has.

Death doesn’t have to be constantly associated with tears and beautiful memories of a person. Sometimes, it is the imperfections that they have that creates a greater impact to us. It was for that particular phrase in the commercial that captures the essence of the depth of love. Something like “it’s the little imperfections that makes life perfect”. Isn’t that what we are facing every single moment of our lives? Our dads, our moms, our siblings, our loved ones….

Cos no one is perfect, so do we. And that is what life is.
